Lessons from the Wise Men

By Pastor Sharon Williams

Matthew 2:1-12

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, wisemen from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

Saw: They were paying attention, I could have missed it. God knows how to get our attention (if we are open to it)

He helps us SEE in different ways. Example: Mary, Elizabeth: Angel appeared and spoke. Joseph – dreams, Shepherds – Angels in the sky.

9 After this interview the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy!

Sought: The Wisemen pursued the King of Kings. They went looking for Him. “From the East.” A long journey? Probably. They left their country and went to a foreign land searching for the Messiah, a baby.

11 They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Served – They bowed before the child and worshiped Him. Honor and worship. Then they gave gifts. These were expensive gifts. They came with a plan, bringing gifts.

Be prepared to give gifts when you meet with Jesus. The greatest gift we can give our King is a sacrificed life.

Discussion

1. How does God speak to you? How can you work harder to SEE?

2. Are you pursuing Jesus? How far will you go to seek Him?

3. What gift will you leave at His feet?
