The Focus of Your Praise

By Pastor Shana Wise

Praise is mentioned 363 times in the bible

When was the last time you used praise as a weapon against the enemy?

Praise is a weapon.

King David chose to praise the Lord throughout his life and he was victorious in all of his battles (he never lost a battle).

Is Praise a part of who you are (your character)?

If you read the book of Psalms, Kings, and Chronicles, you will find David not only being a shepherd, friend, husband, father, brother, and king; but you see her character of a praise and worshipper throughout his life.

Can you praise him beyond your self-esteem?

Genesis 29:35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So, she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.

Leah is a great example of how she shifted her focus to praise once Judah was born. Before then her focus was competing with her sister over Jacob’s love. She didn’t feel loved or beautiful by Jacob. Yet once she changed her focus from man to God, she was able to praise God.

Are you able to lead others in praise?

Miriam chose to not only praise the Lord, but lead other women into praising him when He brought the children of Israel out of Egypt.

In Judges chapter 5, the Judge Deborah chose to praise God (and lead others) after Barak won the war against the enemy who had been supposing their people for over twenty years.

Are you able to praise God for other people?

Ruth 4 13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14 The women said to Naomi: “Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”

Other women praised God because Ruth became pregnant by Boaz, and Naomi’s family lineage continued.

Can you praise God when tragedy happens?

Job 1:20-22, At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” 22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

Do you praise God through his son Jesus Christ?

All throughout the gospels you find people praising God through the works of his son Jesus. Through healings, deliverance, miracle, raising of the dead, and many more works; we find individuals and crowds of people praising God.

Mat. 21:15-16 (NKJV) 15 But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant 16 and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise’?”

We are only able to have our praise perfected through our belief in Jesus Christ. For we are the ones that he died so that we may have eternal life.
